Laserable Wood Sheets
Laserable wood sheets are flat, consistent and sized for laser beds. Lumber-yard wood varies in moisture and flatness, which shows up as uneven engraving and cuts that don't go through. For production work, consistent sheet saves a lot of re-runs.
A CO₂ laser darkens the wood where it engraves and cuts clean shapes. Epilog and Kern CO₂ lasers handle everything from thin veneer to hardwood blanks.

Hardwood (Maple, Cherry, Walnut)
High contrast engravings. Maple engraves light, walnut and cherry provide rich dark tones.
Softwood (Pine, Cedar)
Lower contrast but aromatic and popular for rustic applications. Can burn unevenly.
Baltic Birch Plywood
Most consistent results. Flat, stable, and available in standard sheet sizes. Best for production runs.
MDF
Very consistent and engraves dark. Its glues give off strong fumes, and it is not for food contact.
Bamboo
Engraves with good contrast. Popular for cutting boards and awards.
Laserable Wood Sheets
Pre-cut sheets engineered for laser work. Available at laserengraving.ca for consistent production.
LaserDark™ Marking Spray
LaserDark is a colouring spray that adds contrast to laser-engraved wood and other porous materials. Follow the directions on the can for when to apply it and how long to let it dry, and test on a scrap of the same wood first.
Black
The most contrast on light woods such as maple and birch.
Brown
A softer tone that blends with the grain.
Finish Coat
Clear top coat to seal the engraved and coloured area.
Fire and fume safety with wood
- Wood can catch fire, especially when cutting. Never leave a job running unattended, and keep a fire extinguisher nearby.
- Keep air assist on when cutting. It blows flame and smoke away from the cut.
- Plywood and MDF glues give off formaldehyde-bearing fumes. Run fume extraction for every job.
- Clean resin and debris out of the cutting table and exhaust regularly; built-up residue burns.
- For cutting boards and other food-contact items, use solid hardwood or bamboo and a food-safe finish. Don't use MDF or plywood.
